Find Yourself in a Story

My students need books that represent them. Each of these books shows children a whole new world of possibilities.

My Students

Welcome to 1st grade where we explore, invent, investigate and inquire. Our students thrive on hands-on experiences that allow them to experience the world in a different way.

Our school receives Title I funding, and the majority of the students receive free or reduced-price lunch.

Dutch Fork Elementary School, Academy of Environmental Sciences, we offer a comprehensive program which includes inquiry-based, hands-on studies of the environment all around us. Our program immerses children in an environment that emphasizes discovery and exploration, collaborative study, scientific research, use of scientific tools and technology, and a strong sense of community. In addition, students have the opportunity to integrate and apply the environmental sciences in reading, math, social studies, writing, and the arts.

Please consider giving us a helping hand as we journey through our year!

My Project

Each of the books listed contains characters that are primarily African American written by African American authors. The majority of children in my classroom and school are students of color and as I looked at the books that were available for them to read, I noticed that they were filled with either white or animal characters.

Children need to see themselves in books.

They need to read books that connect with their life experiences. They need to see people that look like them. While some of these books do address segregation and civil rights, the majority reflect other aspects of life.

Children need to see themselves in books: owning pets, getting their haircut, being scientists, spending time with family. They need to learn about more than just basketball players and civil rights activists. They need to see they can be musicians and artists, authors and readers, barbers and mothers, fathers and big brothers. These books will allow new worlds to open and to simply show these children the possibilities that are available to them.
