My Students

Students in math class have come to discover that memorizing formulas isn't the goal. In my class, we use math to solve problems and understand everyday situations. This means getting out of your seat, working with a team and thinking "how can I approach this problem."

Students at my school love learning, especially when it is meaningful to them.

They are a diverse group with varying cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds. The school doesn't have many resources, but everyone works hard to use what is available to make learning accessible and engaging. The students are the most engaged in math lessons when they can ask questions, collect their own data and have the space to make sense of what the data means or could mean.

My Project

In 6th grade, students begin to discover how fractions and decimals are use to measure rate. The idea of rate is much more meaningful when it's connected to movement in their daily lives--walking, running, playing basketball, etc. The timer and the stop watches will help students calculate rate and will be the starting point for discussions about how rate works. Students will have the opportunity to graph results and ask questions about what the results mean.

This project will connect the students active side, with their curiosity, all while using math as the skeleton for what the information means.

Students will also continue to develop their ability to record and analyze data--a key 21st century skill.
