My 2nd grade students are very diverse, avid readers. About one-third of our students are from low-income and choose to attend our school because of the programs that we have to offer them.
Our students need to have adequate access to a variety of different styles of literature in the classroom.
A book is a gift you can open again and again. My goal is for my students to have more than just the school library to choose books from. I want them to be able to have a reading series of their choice, right within their reach!
My Project
Chapter books come at an important time in a young reader's life. They bridge the gap between early readers, picture books, I-can-read-books and the more complex titles found in fiction. One of the best ways to inspire transitional readers to keep reading is by offering a wide range of high-interest, just right books where students can identify with the characters and stories. Updating our classroom chapter book section with new series, high interest books and a wider variety will help make our youngest students stronger readers. I want every student to experience the wonder of finding themselves, and losing themselves in a great book.
