My Students
Variety is the spice of life, and that is my awesomely diverse class this year. The wide range of learners from varying backgrounds makes every day interesting. My school, as a whole, has about 89% students on free or reduced-price lunch. Additionally, 83% of my school is Hispanic, with a large percentage of students speaking only Spanish at home.
My 42 kids range from the newly homeless, to kids from single-parent households, to new students displaced by Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
Meeting the academic, emotional, and social needs of my students can be challenging, but it is also very rewarding. Although my students face many hardships, they are very resilient and are so eager to learn. Therefore, I want to give them all the reading resources to do so.
My Project
After many years having only a few books in my classroom library, I now have a great classroom library from a variety of sources. My current problem is that the classroom doesn't have any space for bookshelves and my students really love reading.
Accessibility to great literature using the two spinning shelves is key to nurturing eager readers.
I now have these great books and want my students to have easy access to them. The two spinning shelves will help me organize my books by "Genres" in one unit and "Authors" in another. Now students can find the books that they want easily and can also find the rest of the series quickly. Less frustration equates to more confidence in book selection and therefore more success in reading.
When a student finds that author, genre, or even series that they just can't get enough of, my job here is done. At that point, they take off as readers and the sky is the limit.
