My students need financial literacy, manipulatives, and games to better understand how to add money, make change, and connect money to the real world.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are beyond amazing! We are at a Title I school in Las Vegas, where many students believe New York or Paris is just a few miles away on the strip. This has to change!
I have adjusted the way I teach from a text, or a set curriculum, to teaching to experiences; my students have never soaked up so much information in all my twelve years of teaching.
We use challenging vocabulary words each week and thrive to find multiple ways to use them, whether it be watching a live feed of a lady "coax" an abandoned puppy from under a house (this went viral), or having a Glow Party to learn about odd and even numbers. Our favorite was "traveling" to Italy for lunch and having to fix the menu that had no punctuation! I have never been so excited to go to work each day and my students that have attendance problems in the past are actually coming to school!
Please help us out..these kids are "going places!"
My Project
Our classroom needs to become a "real live" bank for a day so my students can understand what money is and how is works. Not only will they have a variety of books to read, but then will have the chance to interact with money as we make things in our classroom cost money for the day. They will get a paycheck for coming to school (their job), but then as they need things, it will all come at a price. They may apply for classroom jobs, pay rent (for desks), as well as receive fines.
The items I am requesting are realistic coins and bills, The Allowance Game, and making change cards that will improve the understanding of money in the REAL WORLD(no, money does not grow on trees) and improve their addition and subtraction skills.
What happens when they run out of money? Do they get a second job, take out a loan, borrow from a friend? Are the things they HAVE to have needs or just want? The possibilities are endless and I can only imagine the discourse at the end each day!
