Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Everyday, my students arrive at school with hope for their futures. Our school is a Title /one school, which means we have a high percentage of students living in poverty. While poverty brings many hardships, it doesn't taint our attitudes and outlook at Stevens Park Elementary. Early each morning, you'll hear four hundred plus voices call out our "Bulldog Beliefs" with a rousing howl at the end! Stevens Park Elementary is the happiest school I've ever had the fortune to enter.
The majority of my students are living in poverty, making financial literacy lessons extremely important.
Most of them will be the first in their families to attend college and it is essential that they learn money basics before they need to pay for college.
Many of my students have limited or no access to books outside of school, making our literacy time so precious. While many of their parents work multiple jobs to provide for their families, my students frequently care for younger siblings. Despite all the challenges they face, my students are dedicated readers and learners.
My Project
My students love using Flocabulary to learn about parts of speech, story elements and weekly events. The catchy raps and rhymes have them all singing about vocabulary! Unfortunately, we are limited to the free videos available on YouTube and don't have access to the bank of videos and interactive lessons on money and financial literacy!
Oh, how my fifth graders long to sing and rap about making a budget, interest rates and credit ratings!
Flocabulary will help us learn the basics and more about smart money management.
Everyone of my students is in a book club. Each week they discuss their books, diving into the deeper meaning of every tale they read. How powerful would it be for them to read both fiction and non-fiction books about making smart money decisions!
