Financial Stakeholders

Help me give my students incentives (art supplies, electronics, etc.) to understand how to be informed consumers in the marketplace, as well as stakeholders in their communities .

My Students

The guiding principle in my school's mission statement is to infuse the arts into the core curriculum. To do that, it is important to know our students as individuals. The students at our school are very diverse, with multiple ethnicities, a wide variety of economic backgrounds (over 50% of our students are on the free and reduced-price lunch program), diverse learning abilities, and an incredible amount of talent. We believe each student is different, and different is welcomed and celebrated here.

My job is to help every student come to the belief that he or she is capable of success, as that is half the battle won.

Once they believe they are capable, they are able to use classroom learning, along with collaboration and critical thinking skills, to make sense of the world and progress in their formal education.

William Butler Yeats once said, "Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire." At our school, we light that fire by encouraging each student to development his or her individual talents, both academically and artistically.

My Project

Students today need to understand how they fit into their world. One very important area in which they need to be savvy stakeholders is in the marketplace. Towards that goal, I have instituted a token economy as part of an educational and behavioral plan for my classroom. As students perform their duties in the classroom they earn "wages" (assignments, behavior, etc.) and "bonuses" (extra work, exemplary character, etc.) that they can then "spend" in our class store. To date, we have learned the basic concepts of assessing demand, stocking, pricing (supply and demand), marketing and consumerism, and, as a bonus, the students learn the intrinsic value of character through specific, extrinsic rewards.

Now that they know the basics, this project will use the incentives of high-value goods and services to learn about investing, saving, budgeting, and revolving credit.

As an art school, high quality art supplies are the most highly sought after goods, and electronics are a close second for sixth graders. Currently, most of my students are of the "earn and spend" mindset, but I would like to introduce them to the value of budgeting and saving (and possibly even investing) for more desired items, as well as the value and pitfalls of revolving credit. Ultimately, the goal is to improve their financial literacy, as well as build skills and character traits that will help make them effective stakeholders in their communities.
