Help me give my students an authentic financial literacy lesson & vocational skills while encouraging character education, by providing them with a store-quality cash register, open sign, and new stock for our school PBIS store!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Special Education Center High School for students ages 14-19. Our amazing program is located in Detroit, Michigan. We have three wings that serve students with Autism, Cognitive Impairments, and Severe/Multiple Impairments. We service students from the entire City of Detroit. Our school has 204 beautiful, young people with varying strengths and weaknesses. Their backgrounds are as diverse as their abilities. I have students whose parents are my colleagues and students who live in boarded up houses. Some come from two-parent homes, and some come from three different homes. About 30% of my students qualify as homeless.
We are all unique, but we are definitely a family here.
My Project
Students with Exceptional Needs have many varying strengths. One common need among them is that for on-going financial training and skills. Our Positive Behavior store enables us to teach this vulnerable population life and financial skills, while allowing students to work for and procure high-ticket items like earphones, basketballs, and even tablets and school spirit wear that they might otherwise not have access to.

This project is to help us acquire a professional cash register for our store, to assist in vocational and financial training for our students. It will also provide for a more visible "Open" sign, that can be seen by all students. It will also help us stock our school store with some frequently requested items such as earbuds, earphones, scented hand sanitizer,basketballs, and LEGOS. This will allow for the hands-on exchange that is needed for training. We appreciate your support as we encourage our kids to be safe, responsible, and respectful, as well as develop their job skills. Thank you!
