My students need to learn about financial literacy in a fun and engaging way, which will prepare them for their future in being financially literate, global citizens.
My students are a diverse group of students who are learning in an inquiry-based, International Baccalaureate school and classroom.
I plan on trying my best to receive tools for them that will enhance their thirst for knowledge, inquiry, and learning!
The most important thing for student's learning to grow with a world view, as global citizens is that students are able to take ownership of their learning and find answers to their wonders. I plan to engage and inspire students to learn more about the world around them.
I have first grade students who love to learn, help others, and their environment, and I would love to have some of the tools that will aid in this process.
Students, through these projects, improve independent reading skills, and financial literacy and math skills. They will also learn self-management, how to work collaboratively, learn more about themselves and the world around them and pay it forward in ways that will benefit others.
My Project
The tools we have requested such as books about financial literacy are student centered and easy to engage students . My students will learn about being financially literate in 1st grade, which will give them a great start in life! If my students receive these materials they will have an improved sense of responsibility and math and finance knowledge. We have asked for books, and games, and manipulatives that are all to be used for a unit centered around financial literacy.
IB students learn not just about themselves, but the world around them and having the tools through the use of these materials, such as knowing how to count coins and dollars, understanding why they should save, how our country uses money, how to add and subtract dollars and cents, will really propel them to become more financially aware at 6 and 7 years old.
Specifically, we plan to use:
Activities such as: Exploring Economy Hands-On Activities, Roll & Solve Money Game, books about money,
Jumbo Double-Sided Magnetic Money,
18" x 24" Magnetic Write & Wipe, a
Money Folder Game Library, Saving & Spending Hands On learning activities, a board game titled, Are You Ready for 3rd Grade?, and other learning materials to be used entirely for our money unit, which I plan to span 6 weeks.
During this unit students will work collaboratively and independently to explore and learn about finance.
These materials will truly change students perspective about the importance of understanding finances.
