My amazing students live in a rural area, and more than half survive below the poverty line. My classroom is an inclusion class. This means that I teach students with disabilities along with their typically developing peers.
I learn as much from my students as they learn from me.
Despite the challenges my students face from learning difficulties, poverty, and living in the heart of the opioid crisis, they continue to have good attitudes. They are eager to learn. I want to fill their space with the tools that help them to have the same opportunities as children in more prominent areas. My students deserve every advantage.
My Project
Economics and financial literacy are difficult concepts to teach to third grade students. Our social studies standards require that we start at this level. These abstract concepts will come alive in the financial literacy books and games included in this project.
Hands on learning combined with authentic experiences will create enthusiasm for the topic of economics.
Understanding how money and the barter system works is a life skill that will continue to help the students in their futures. They can understand it at this level and build an appreciation of how to control finances.
This project contains mostly books about finances and economics. Some of the books are intended to be read to the students. Others will be read by the students. They are filled with brightly colored illustrations and graphics that center around money; however, they are written with a child's interest in mind. The game included, the Allowance Game, will help the students take the idea of finances as a life skill, and make it more applicable to their current situation. Allowances are all the students know right now in relation to finances. This activity will connect their own life experiences with the world of finance. Thank you for helping my students with this difficult task.
