Our school is a small, rural school in Arkansas made up of students in grades four through seven. While they are going through a difficult stage in the transition from kids to teenagers (as all middle school students do), they are among the most energetic and exciting age group to work with. When they get excited about learning, their enthusiasm explodes out of the classroom!
Many of our students face the challenges that poverty brings every day, but at school they have a chance to escape and learn how to overcome their challenges.
My Project
Occasionally, especially as we near the end of the year, there are days when our school schedule is changed because of things like field trips, state testing, or assemblies. Instructional time is inevitably lost during days like this, because teachers do not want to start a new lesson if they don't see all of their students, or there isn't enough time to completely start something new or teach a whole lesson. Instead of struggling to come up with ideas for how to use this time to benefit students, why not use it to teach financial literacy?
This project would create a school lending library of card and board games related to financial literacy.
This lending library would be housed in our school library, in a central location. Then, teachers could check out games to use with their students as they desire. Some teachers might want to check out games that relate to a specific lesson, unit, or skill they are teaching. Others might check out games to use as a team building activity with their mentor groups, or to give students a "brain break" from other assignments while still teaching valuable skills. These games would help students and teachers maximize their time at school, and help students learn valuable financial literacy skills in the process!
