I teach a class of 25 amazing second graders. They are loving, intelligent, kind, and funny. They come to school wanting to learn and become better citizens.
My students come from diverse backgrounds, and many come from lower income families.
Many of my students come from challenging home environments and have limited resources at home. I also have English learners and students with special needs such as autism, ADD, and ADHD. Many of my students do not have basic supplies to help them succeed. The one thing they all have in common is that they are eager to learn.
Instruction in the area of financial literacy is critical from an early age. My students are learning the basics of financial literacy. We are learning to add, subtract, and compare numbers. We are also learning the value of coins and adding and subtracting money. All of these concepts are the foundation of financial literacy. My students have been telling me that they love my Flair pens and would like their own Flair pens. For this reason, I would like to add Flair pens to our classroom store. They would love to be able to purchase a variety of pens in their favorite colors. My students will be able to create a savings plan and budget to purchase their favorite items from the class store.
By opening a real-world store in my class, I am teaching my students to save money and budget for their wants.
The opportunity to "buy" and do some long-term saving for their own favorite items will be very motivating for my second graders to learn the basics of financial literacy. The Flair pens will be high interest items that my students will need to save their coyote bucks to purchase. My students will be able to experience the importance of financial literacy education. I can't wait to open the class store!
