Help me give my students 13 calculators so they can calculate how many stocks to buy for the virtual Stock Market Game they will be playing all year long.
I teach twenty-five happy and excited-to-learn third graders, and all day long they have fun growing, thinking, and trying their best. Our school is a wonderful, small multicultural school located in Los Angeles. Many of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and everyone receives free breakfast.
Our school specializes in integrating art and technology with our academic subjects.
My students learn best when I generate excitement for learning. My students want to learn financial literacy by researching stocks to invest in and playing an online stock market game on our classroom iPads.
My Project
Financial literacy means that students develop a keen understanding of money and using money when they are working with word problems during our math lessons. The California Common Core state standards want third-grade students to have a deep understanding of whole numbers and fractions. I have signed up our class to play the virtual Stock Market Game. Our class will be competing with the sixth graders at our school to see who makes the best investments from now through late Spring, 2019.
My students will use the thirteen calculators I have requested to determine how many stocks they can purchase for the Stock Market Game.
They will also use the calculators to check their work when we are adding and subtracting. Having my students participate in the Stock Market Game will help them develop financial literacy and also learn real world knowledge about companies and investing.
Having these calculators will allow my students to explore various math problems and will help my students get that deep understanding of math concepts which they will be able to use in third grade and for life!
