My Students
I have 48 amazing, eager, and caring students in the kindergarten classroom with my teaching partner. They come to school every day with an excitement for learning!
I teach at a Title I school which means that a majority of my students are considered high poverty and many are second language learners.
My school embraces innovative ways to personalize learning for all of our students. Our administrator supports anything that benefits our students and their ability to make growth both academically and socially.
My Project
In my classroom, every Wednesday is a "Wonder Wednesday." We use this time to focus on math, science, and literacy through games and play.
We would love to use Lakeshore's Fairy Tale STEM kits in our classroom.
To incorporate financial literacy with this project, we will dive deeper into the stories and apply financial literacy skills through the actions of the characters in the stories. We will facilitate financial literacy discussions (cost of items for example) through the use of these kits. For example, in the story of the Gingerbread Man, one of their STEM challenges is to build a raft to get the Gingerbread Man across the river safely. We could put prices on the materials. Students will use the play money and cash register requested (higher prices for better materials) to purchase materials. They will be challenged to build the cheapest raft that they can while maintaining quality. It would also lead us into a discussion of quality of products versus the cost. This is something that the students can directly apply to their own lives.
I am excited about bringing financial literacy discussions into my classroom. Using fairy tales and hands-on materials from the kits will be engaging and memorable to my students.
