My students need active play materials to teach young hands on learners financial literacy including markets, shopping carts, pizza parlors and many other items.
This is my second year as a teacher for a Kindergarten through second grade self-contained class with special education students. My students have a variety of disabilities and challenges that interfere with their education. As a result, the students are part of a self-contained special education classroom known as CARES.
Our students learn about the world around them by participating in hands on learning activities.
Building, creating, and trying out new learning is how ideas stick! Although learning is a challenge for our students, these little learners are excited to learn new things!
My Project
My young students are part of a CARES life skills special education classroom. Even though they are only 5-7 years old, learning financial literacy must start young. For our little learners, the way to learn about money is through play. Being able to shop at a pretend market, cook and order pizza at a pretend parlour, and purchase stuff from classmates with pretend money all give my students practice with money at an ability level that makes sense to them.
Before young students are ready to count coins and make change, they must have hands on experience with purchasing items through play.
This project includes a play market, food, pizza making materials, pretend cash registers, and pretend money. It also includes a few games geared toward younger students, and lots of coins/money/cash register/atm supplies so that every student has plenty to use during pretend play.
Giving young students practice with money and teaching financial literacy starts in the classroom with young students, and is accomplished through play. Creating life long financially literate students starts early, and this project will help!
