My students are in kindergarten through fifth grade with a variety of learning needs who attend a public school in an urban area in Pennsylvania. I teach at a Title I school where many of my students participate in the free school lunch program and Backpack Initiative food on the weekends.
Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best.
They want to be in school because they want to learn everything they can to be successful in the future.
My Project
The Osmo is an interactive tool to add to the iPads my district already has available for our students. Many of my students have functional math goals involving adding collections of coins and making change. This is a practical life skill that needs to be practiced regularly. During math time, students would have the opportunity to use the Osmo Pizza Company game. This game can be played in collaboration with pairs of students. The student is given a pizza order and then he/she has to make the pizza. The game scans your pizza to see if it is correct. If so, the customer pays for the pizza usually needing change. The student then has to figure out how much change is needed, count out the money and place it in front of the game to scan. It is a fun way to practice running a business and counting back change, helping to reinforce real-world math and financial literacy.
Financial literacy is a complex skill that is essential to independent living.
By addressing these building blocks early in education, my students will be prepared to tackle more complex skills later such as setting a budget and keeping a checkbook.
The Osmo Coding Awbie will help my students with logic skills and problem solving, using physical objects to create in a digital world.
