I have the unique opportunity to teach students from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Students in my class are able to work together toward a common goal of music literacy and performance techniques despite their musical background and ability to pay for private music lessons.
Unfortunately, my school system does not provide funding for professional development and therefore it is the sole responsibility of the teacher to do so.
My school district also does not have the resources to provide content specific workshops or training.
My Project
At this conference, I will have the opportunity to attend sessions which focus on financial literacy and the importance of budgeting and planning for the music classroom. I will also have the opportunity to meet choral music educators from other parts of the country who teach in the same socioeconomic and diverse population as me. One of the biggest challenges I face in the classroom is how to provide high-quality musical experiences for students who do not have the financial means to cover basic expenses.
Financial literacy is a skill needed not only in the music classroom, but in everyday life.
I feel that as I become more knowledgeable about financial literacy, I can transfer those skills to my students and help them be more prepared for life after high school.
