My Students
Some days for my kids are rough. Many come from unstable settings at home, without food security, without their basic needs met. It's a daily struggle to convince them that dreaming for better days is worth the trouble. But still, they write, they create, they show up.
Big-hearted.
Passionate. Trauma-stricken. Frustrated.
My students are brave and capable of great accomplishment, but they are often stymied by their lack of exposure to the breadth of experiences that builds essential life skills. Financial literacy is a huge need.
My Project
Understanding how the brain affects the way we look at money is a lesson we often don't understand ourselves. So, how can we teach our kids to understand the opportunity costs of unwise spending? Well, it helps to have a bit of humor at hand.
Comedian Jeff Kreisler, coauthor of Dollars and Sense, has graciously agreed to come speak with our juniors and seniors about setting themselves up for sound financial decision-making.
I am seeking to have a copy of Jeff's book for each student to take home. This is an amazing opportunity to empower our kids, to get their thinking straight about spending, and to have some fun as they challenge their own ideas of the value of money.
