Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach transitional kindergarten and kindergarten at a high poverty Title I School. My classroom makeup consists of English Language Learners, students with both academic and physical special needs, and several students that do not have many opportunities.
I love being able to create a caring and respectful classroom community for my students and offering opportunities that show them all of their possibilities!
My favorite part of teaching is building a community in my classroom and creating learning adventures that get my students excited about learning, so that they cannot wait to come to school.
My Project
Financial literacy is an important life skill that begins in kindergarten! My students are learning foundational skills such as counting by ones, fives, and tens, beginning addition and subtraction, comparing numbers, the value of coins, understanding greater/less than, and how to count money.
Kindergartners learn best through play and by using engaging, hands-on materials.
The magnetic numbers and number sense kit will be used to work on number sense, which lays the foundation for financial literacy. I will use the magnetic coins to begin teaching coin values and have students practice counting out the coins. They will be able to use the magnetic lap boards to manipulate the magnetic pieces. The magnetic pattern blocks will be used for number sense as well. Students will create a picture and count and write the number of shapes used for each picture.
Using these hands-on centers and manipulatives will make learning math and financial literacy skills fun and exciting for my students.
Financial literacy is an important skill to introduce to young students. Practicing number sense in a fun and hands-on way will build a solid foundation for these students.
