Do you remember getting an allowance when you were a child? Maybe you saved your allowance and birthday cash to purchase something you really wanted like a new bicycle? One of the challenges my students face is learning to relate math to real-world experiences.
My students live in a high poverty area and attend a Title I school.
This means most students in our school are either behind academically, or at-risk for falling behind. Like most kids, they are excited about learning when it involves anything other than the run-of-the-mill textbooks.
My Project
Money management is extremely important for the future of all children. The games I am requesting all deal with managing your money. They allow the players to earn money by doing chores, and making decisions. Should they spend or should they save? I am also requesting play money to help them relate to real world experiences. I have a Math Menu game where I pass out menus with food items on them and the students are asked to order, pay and receive change. The play money would be fun to add to this lesson later this year.
My project is important because most of my students come from blue-collar or welfare homes.
Most will graduate and enter straight into the work force. It is important that these kids know how to manage their earnings.
