This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I get to touch the future everyday as a teacher! One of my favorite things to do as an educator is help students see how AWESOME they are. It's amazing the things they can accomplish when they believe in themselves.
In the words of Rita Pierson: Every Child Deserves a Champion!
I teach at a title 1 school where all of the students receive free breakfast and lunch.
To meet my scholar's unique learning needs, I have adapted my classroom to give students the freedom of choice. Not all of my students have to sit in the hard blue chairs provided by the school, but they can choose a wobble stool, bucket seats, tire seats or even a comfy pillow on the floor.
Another choice they have is using their iPads to enhance their learning. Most students tend to be visual and audible learners. My scholars love listening to stories on their iPads and doing other fun activities on their devices.
My Project
In 2nd grade, we have to build an understanding of money. One of the best ways to learn about the value of dollar is through real-world experiences.
My vision is to facilitate a store in my classroom where the students create the goods, set a price and then sell and buy merchandise to one another.
We'll use the Lakeshore paper money as currency for the store. The money that students "make" selling their goods can be used to "buy" rewards in class (such as no homework passes, or new mechanical pencils). Through this financial project, I'll also be able to teach literacy standards by having students create ads for their merchandise. The money magnets will assist me in teaching students how to represent values in different ways (for instance 25 cents can be a quarter or two dimes and a nickel).
This project helps me match the rigor of learning about money with real-world relevancy.
