Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 30 hard-working fifth graders. They are curious about the world and love to learn new ways to make their lives and their families lives better.
I work in a socio-economically disadvantaged community.
All 30 of my students are english learners. They have very good work ethic and are enthusiastic about learning. They don't use their economic situation as a negative influence on their learning. It's just one more obstacle that they intend on overcoming. They are great kids.
My Project
Financial literacy is lacking in public education. I teach a unit in mathematics specifically on learning how to manage your finances over the long run. The unit focuses on investing in the stock market, however it's not just limited to that. I am requesting an Apple MacBook Air laptop to enable my students to learn about investing for the future through the stock market.
Once the kids know enough about how the stock market works, they work in small groups to create an "investment portfolio" of 10 companies that are publicly traded. They will use the MacBook to track their stocks. I will monitor their investment and end the unit with a competition focusing on which group made the most money.
It's a lot of fun and the kids learn valuable financial lessons.
My students don't have many advantages.
Learning about financial literacy will help even the playing field for them. Without these basic skills many of my students will remain in the same financial cycle that they are currently in. Our goal is to end that cycle and begin a new cycle with many more options in life.
