Help me give my students board games that teach and encourage financial literacy! A beneficial and real-life skill that is so necessary for them to learn.
Many of my students are labeled high-risk, receive Free and Reduced Lunch, are English Language Learners (ELL), come from low socioeconomic households, and have trouble in school. Being able to engage them in mathematics through the use of differentiated instruction is a wonderful way to get them involved and excited about the learning process.
The majority of my students cannot afford their own supplies, so I want to make sure that all of my students are receiving the same education.
One way to ensure their success is to supply my students with quality materials. Any assistance you can offer in making learning accessible and enjoyable to my 7th grade Math students would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
My Project
I want to enhance my classroom instruction by exposing my students to real-world financial situations through board games and a video series. My students have been working so hard and deserve the financial literacy resources and technology to help bring them to the next level. The students will learn real-life skill splaying these games and then create a mini video series to showcase what they have learned and to share with other students to teach them, as well. Their videos will demonstrate how to grocery shop, comparison shop for a car, how to identify the best deal when applying for credit, and/or how to fill out an apartment rental application. Topics will also include paying for college, saving and investing, as well as career choices like financial advisers, accountants, investment bankers, and portfolio managers.
My students are bright young adults who are eager to learn, so I try to make my lessons as engaging and relevant as possible!
Once we script, film, and produce a financial literacy film, it will become a highly motivating effective lesson moving forward, that can be shown over and over.
The funding will include financial board games, cards, and iPad cases to protect the iPads while filming. The students will work together to put their financial literacy skills to best use. The games Life, Protect Your Assets, Money Bags, and PayDay all teach players thought-provoking strategies for money management and the impact of financial and investment choices. All of the games deal with financial blows, such as taxes and emergencies and balancing cash flow by earning income. The funding will also provide iPad cases so that the iPads are protected while students are using them to record the video series.
