Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is one of thirty-two schools in a very large school district. Eighty-seven percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Many students at our school depend on school programs for food over the weekend and during the summer. Students also often are in need of academic and emotional support.
Our students are passionate and eager learners and need a way to share their stories to inspire the future.
To aid in breaking the poverty cycle we provide student directed learning opportunities. Giving our students many experiences to learn about their interests, collaborate with their peers and problem solve insures our students have the confidence to become anything they want!
My Project
My students need to learn about Financial Literacy. To create enthusiasm for the subject while teaching money management skills, I plan to use board games. To help them learn, and help them learn the concepts of normally dry and boring finance classes, I will have them play games. I have selected a collection of games that can all be played during in an hour or less involving electronic credit cards, investing, saving, and strategy. Games include Monopoly Game: Ultimate Banking Edition, Settlers of Catan, and The Game of Life Electronic Banking. These games will also teach valuable social skills and team building.
With such a high poverty rate, many have little or poor understanding of finance and credit.
After learning to play some of the games, students will be tasked with designing and creating their own educational game that can be used to benefit and/or enrich learning.
