Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are bright, energetic and full of life. They come every day excited about being in kindergarten and to learn so many new things. Their excitement and eagerness is so contagious, they are truly inspirational and want them to have a positive classroom experience, as they learn about being part of a classroom community. I teach in a California Spanish dual-immersion public kindergarten classroom, where the student body is very diverse. The immersion model is to create bi-literate students.
With the expectation on kindergarten students to have a strong number sense and be able to recognize numbers to 30 and count to 100, and for some, learn it in a new language, it can be difficult for them to gain financial literacy without first having a strong mathematical foundation.
The only way students will gain these skills is by providing engaging, hands-on, age-appropriate activities that meets the needs of all the students.
My Project
The use of board games, card games, play money will allow me to provide students, with a variety in skills, the ability to master key mathematical concepts that are essential to becoming financially literate. Children learn best through play and by adding play money to our cash register, the learning possibilities are endless. The Zingo and Bingo games will be used to reinforce number sense with numbers up to 20. The counters will be used to support students with one to one correspondence. The addition and subtraction games will be used in small group with me. I will teach how to play the game and then students will be able to use for small group work during math centers and during free play. Students will have the option of also playing any of these games during our free time, allowing even more practice, not just in our math block.
In kindergarten, it is essential students are exposed to all kinds of learning activities guised as play because of their short attention span but playing games such as Zingo, Sum Swamp, Bingo, Go Fish, Zeus on the Loose and others will keep them engaged and motivated, while they build their math skills.
Some of the concepts they will be learning from these resources are: number sense, one to one correspondence, addition, subtraction and value of money. The earlier we provide a strong math foundation and start teaching them about financial literacy, the more successful they will be in becoming financially competent.
