Financial Literacy for Students with Special Needs
I need the 'On Your Own' software to enhance our students' ability to practice financial independence through an online program where they choose their paths and practice real-life decisions.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a large middle school in the St. Louis area. The majority of the students come from low, socio-economic backgrounds where over ninety-five percent qualify for free/reduced breakfast and lunch. I have a group of middle school students (grades 6-8) with special needs that includes cognitive abilities in the infant range to students functioning in areas at a 5th-grade level.
I have students with Autism and Intellectual Disabilities, emotional and behavioral difficulties, visual impairments including blindness (Braille user), sensory disorders, physical disabilities (use of wheelchairs), communication disabilities (use of iPads and devices), and motor deficits (requires feeding and toileting assistance).
My Project
I would like to think that I am a person who makes financially sound decisions for my family, but to teach students the importance of having financial responsibility is an area where I am unsure. I need to strengthen my professional development in financial literacy and personal finance. This will allow me to transfer my knowledge to my students with special needs.
The students in my Essential Life Skills program need a tremendous amount of support in financial education in order to develop their independent living skills.
Students will need to know banking, budgeting, paying bills, investing, employment, income taxes, and more. All of our students are at different levels of mathematics and will require differentiation of instruction.
