My students need plastic and magnetic coins, the Allowance Game, double sided counters, along with clothespins, bubble supplies and more so they can learn about money.
Financial literacy is an important topic for all students, no matter how old or young. Our students are consumers. They need to learn the basics of economics and money principles so that they can make informed decisions about how to spend and save their money.
I teach a wonderful group of fifth graders.
They are inquisitive and love to ask questions. However, they have no real sense about the value of a dollar. I often hear them say, I want this, or I want that, without any regard to the cost of the item they are requesting. My students need to have experiences where they are working with money. They need to work with budgeting their money, as well as with making purchases and learning how to make change.
My Project
I strive to provide opportunities that are BOTH meaningful and exciting. Learning should be fun, engaging, and individualized. This project will help my students learn and practice many life skills as they learn to use money in the real world. My students need plastic and magnetic coins, the Allowance Game, and double sided counters so that they can have hands on experiences with money. They will use the money to purchase items from a class store. These items will be experiences with bubbles, using clothespins for crafts, and pictures with a Polaroid camera. With these class store purchases, my students will practice making economic decisions, budgeting their money, purchasing items, and acting as a cashier so they practice making change with real coins. This experience of handling money, both as a consumer and clerk, will help them understand the value of money and true financial literacy.
Financial literacy is important.
This project will take the concept of money off of the paper and make it real for my students. Handling coins and making change for purchases will provide my students with the opportunity to apply their learning in meaningful ways. I am excited for the opportunities this project provides.
