Every student needs to be challenged. I work with academically intellectually gifted students in three rural schools. All three are Title I schools where all students receive free breakfast and lunch. All three schools are in close proximity to one of our nation's largest military bases.
The AIG students are some of the hardest to grow academically.
Their teachers and I consult regularly to find ways to make sure this student population has access to challenging learning experiences and access to diverse ways to approach a problem. They need opportunities to expand their thinking and develop their unique gifts. As their teacher, I have to bring many experiences to them because the rural environment just doesn't offer the same opportunities that a city might.
Just as these students have academic needs, their regular ed peers do too. As an AIG teacher, I work with all the students who need acceleration. Every student needs a challenge.
My Project
My students are bright, curious and have big dreams and goals. They are the high achievers of the schools and they need enrichment and challenges that move them beyond the typical elementary expectations.
There are no financial literacy programs in my elementary schools to teach students the fundamentals of how to manage money.
My students are gifted and will likely be the doctors, attorneys, CEO's and entrepreneurs of the near future. I want these children to know where money comes from, how to manage money and the pros and cons of using credit. The books and games I have requested are focused on kid friendly fundamentals of money and our economic system. The historical fiction texts, like Finding Langston, bring in the financial hardships and courageous victories during the Great Migration in the United States. These students will move into their middle and high school years with an understanding of finance and will be better prepared to handle the money they will make as they take on summer jobs and babysitting in the upcoming years and careers later on.
