Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The first grade students in my classroom are fun, energetic, and witty! They are also diverse in ethnicity, economics, and academics. We are a Title I, dual-language school in a Seattle neighborhood. The students in my class, and within our school, speak a wide variety of languages including Spanish, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Somali among others. However, one common denominator is that they all work hard and want more. They want more knowledge, they want more out of life, and they love to learn! In order to do that, they need the materials that can help them be successful and continue to want to be lifelong learners.
My Project
Help me give our students access to texts which wrap around the math skills we are learning in our classroom.
My students love math and reading, it only makes sense to combine the two into this project for our classroom.
In hopes of building our math library and in turn love of math and reading, this project uses texts to focus on specific math skills we learn in first grade and skills which will challenge my students.
The books we are requesting come in collections from AKJ resources, with texts organized by skill, such as Money, Time, Counting, Patterns, and each collection with at least 5 books which will be added to our library in a new section (math library). These texts will help build financial literacy in our classroom focusing on basic skills needed of first grade students.
