Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The first grade students in my classroom are fun, energetic, and witty! They are also diverse in ethnicity, economics, and academics. We are a Title I, dual-language school in a Seattle neighborhood. The students in my class, and within our school, speak a wide variety of languages including Spanish, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Somali among others. However, one common denominator is that they all work hard and want more. They want more knowledge, they want more out of life, and they love to learn! In order to do that, they need the materials that can help them be successful and continue to want to be lifelong learners.
My Project
The requested items in this project will be used to practice math skills which will lead to stronger financial literacy skills
The students in my classroom love games, most students do!
It makes sense then to practice previously introduced mathematics topics through engaging games in cooperative groups within our classroom.
Having a variety of objects to count, as we use in Counting Collections, enables us to build number sense in first grade and fluency. By using games in groups in our math centers we are able to practice skills that develop number sense and operations while also developing social skills. A classroom that provides tools, manipulatives, and materials at the ready for our developing students provides an environment which inspires and creates lifelong learners. Help me give my students access to hands-on mathematics manipulatives and tools to engage them in beginning financial literacy with Lakeshore Math Counters, Tower of Math Games, Self-Checking Math Match-Ups, and Addition Fluency Puzzles for our classroom.
