Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a diverse population, with many coming from a difficult home life and several socioeconomic challenges . This project will educate them on financial challenges they will face post-high school.

They are hard working, motivated students that need more exposure to real life skills that will prepare them to be productive members of their community.

They all have dreams and goals, with many of them unsure on how to attain them. This project will provide them with the tools needed to fulfill these goals.

My Project

The Career Center at Platt High School wants to improve students real world skills needed to make informed financial and career decisions. An event such as the Financial Literacy Fair will give juniors an interactive lesson of fiscal responsibility while exploring their career interests.

I am requesting materials, food and location rental fees for this event.

I hypothesize that if we provide students with this experience, it will promote positive financial decisions. The knowledge and tools presented at the fair will develop skills and cultivate a deeper knowledge of financial literacy as well as giving them the opportunity to experience some of the financial challenges they will face once out on their own. All students will be assigned a career of their choosing, salary and a credit score then provided a budget worksheet requiring them to live within their monthly salary while paying for basics such as housing, utilities, transportation, clothing, food and a college loan payment if applies; students must live within their means and balance their budget. In addition, they will get to interact with community partners who will be representing their industries, this will encourage professional interaction with the business community who will also be providing money saving tips.

To evaluate the impact of this experience I will collect data through a student survey to gain knowledge on what their biggest challenges were and to learn if they stayed within budget. I will also evaluate the impact this simulation has on their career and college goals based on the salaries they had to work with. I anticipate this simulation will be shared with teachers and can be modified to be done within a classroom setting. The Financial Literacy Fair can be a culminating exercise to a personal finance lesson.
