Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are living in the fast changing 21st century global economy, and they are expected to be technologically and financially literate in order to be college and career ready. Let's support them in the area that makes a world of a difference, financial literacy.
My students are the most hard working, enthusiastic, eager beavers I've had in my 17 years of years of teaching.
Third grade mathematics hasn't come easy to many of my students; money is one concept which they have a lot of background knowledge about, but many have struggled to apply it to real-life problem-based scenarios. I want to think socioeconomics doesn't play a factor, but it most certainly can. Most of my students come from very low socioeconomic households. At our school, 97 percent of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Many of my students participate in after school support and/or care due to various family circumstances. Despite these factors, my students come to school every day ready to learn and engage in new learning.
My Project
The Money Hands-On Interactive Math Lab will help keep my entire class engaged through the interactive whiteboard, allowing them to practice money skills, from identifying coins and bills, to adding with money and making change. Students will use Money Hot Dots and Hot Dots Power Pens, and the Restaurant Math-Money Problem Solving Kit to help them review and practice daily essential money skills and concepts.
The wireless headphones and How Much Is a Million? read-along will be used while visiting our mobile financial literacy center; these materials won't constrict students to a designated table when accessing read-alongs. My students will be able to listen comfortably in our class library or directly from their seat of choice. Lastly, the Daily Interactive Math Station and Math Quiz Game Show will provide money concepts review and practice that is much needed to be college and career ready.
Your kind donations to our financial literacy project will certainly bring joy to my students.
They will be ecstatic to get their hands on these fun and interactive learning materials. I'm confident that these materials will help my students master every-day money skills and other math concepts necessary to become college and career ready.
