Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Did you ever wish you had learned about personal finance in High School? How much richer would you be now? Most of my students have had to worry about finances from a young age and they have a ton of questions about how to manage their money. Financial literacy is the civil rights cause of today.
My students come to school every day from all over New York City.
We are a Title 1 school, which means that most of my students are at or below poverty level. Many are the first in their family who will graduate from high school and go on to college. Our school provides a second home for our students and they rely upon us to provide so much more than just a basic education.
My Project
The requested Chromebook will be part of our classroom "library," because in the real world, current financial advice is more often found in Google than in a hard covered book. I want my students to be able to research credit cards and bank accounts that really exist, and in ways that most adults would research rather than rely on fake pretend worksheets. To do that they need reliable and at hand access to the Internet. This Chromebook will be used individually and in groups to look up quick facts or to conduct longer research assignments.
My students begin the year by taking a personality test and then researching careers that fit their scores. They do a cost benefit analysis on the the training, education and other costs associated with that career compared to the financial and personal benefits.
We use this project as a basis to explore future decisions in credit cards, savings, loans, insurance, investing and retirement.
We will also use the Chromebook for the stock market game.
My students don't have the luxury of learning from the mistakes of the past, either their parents' or their own.
They need a chance to practice before going out in the real world, and in the real world personal finance is researched and conducted online. Students learn best by doing and this Chromebook will help facilitate that.
