Our Title I school has around 900 students. I teach English Language Learners from low-income families. They come from diverse backgrounds. A large portion of my school's population comes from poverty-stricken homes. They are kids with hopes and dreams of making their lives better and bettering the future of their families.
All of our students receive free lunch, and most speak another language at home.
Despite their challenges, they make remarkable progress throughout the year. These students will one day change the world, and I cannot wait to see how far they go!
My Project
I am planing to start teaching using literature. The books that I requested will familiarize students with money and why we need it. We will take a close look at coins with the money play set and set up a "class store" for my students to shop at. They will earn "money" for learning their sight words, saving it in their banks and "shopping" at our class store (treasure box) once a week. It will help them get a good representation of real currency and give them an opportunity to practice functional money skills.
By teaching my children about financial literacy, I hope to help them discover the relationships between earning, spending and saving.
In doing this, my students will also begin to understand the value of money. The key is to teach a concept and let them try, even if it means a little extra time in the "class store" while they painstakingly count out coins. Won't you please help a youngster begin to grow into a fiscally responsible adult?
