Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach transitional kindergarten and kindergarten at a high poverty Title I school. My classroom makeup consists of English Language Learners, students with both academic and physical special needs, and several students that do not have many opportunities.
I love being able to create a caring and respectful classroom community for my students and offering opportunities that show them all of their possibilities!
My favorite part of teaching is building a community in my classroom and creating learning adventures that get my students excited about learning, so that they cannot wait to come to school.
My Project
Financial literacy is an important life skill that begins in kindergarten! My students are learning foundational skills such as counting by ones, fives, and tens, beginning addition and subtraction, comparing numbers, the value of coins, understanding greater/less than, and how to count money.
Kindergartners learn best through play and by using engaging, hands-on materials.
They love working together to solve problems, count, and represent numbers. I am requesting hands-on math centers and manipulatives that will help to reinforce number sense, which is an important part of financial literacy. The Build a Number House and Let's Go Fishing Counting centers work on one-to-one correspondence as well as number identification. The magnetic pattern blocks and Geostix will also be used during math centers for number sense. After making a design, students will count and write how many of each shape/color stick was used. The Count to 120 Magnetic Number Chart will be used daily during our calendar time. We will use it to practice counting by 1's, 5's, and 10's which will help support students as we learn to count coins. Students will work in groups to create their own addition and subtraction problems using the Pop and Add to 12 and 20 games, Addition Magnetic Tins, and Addition Match-Ups. Students will work on number sense and number recognition by using the Number Sense Activity Centers, Numbers and Counting Activity Tins, Hands-On Counting and Graphing Centers, and the Counting Match-Ups. Using these hands-on centers and manipulatives will make learning math and financial literacy skills fun and exciting for my students.
Financial literacy is an important skill to introduce to young students. Practicing number sense in a fun and hands-on way will build a solid foundation for these students.
