Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Identifying coin values is tricky in first grade. Students have to count by 5's, 10's, 25's, and 1's. Adding three, four, or five coins with different values is difficult for many students. Practice is the key to success! My students need a few supplies to grasp financial literacy skills.

I teach 24 eager first grade students who enjoy learning how to read, write, and do math.

Our wonderful school is located in sunny, Southern California. My students range from gifted and talented to below grade level. We are proud to be a Nationally Recognized School of Excellence and have won many prestigious awards. Since we are not a Title One School, funding extra projects is very difficult.

My Project

The first step to becoming financial literate is to master basic addition and subtraction facts. I am requesting building numbers kits to develop number sense which will help students learn how to memorize basic facts quickly. We will use these kits in math centers. This game has a self-checking feature which makes it perfect for use in centers during independent work. The tens frames mats will also help to develop number sense while adding any numbers to ten. My students also need money puzzles that teach adding coin values. They will love the ski-ball money game because it looks fun and will definitely keep students interested in adding coin values. Finally, students will need solid subtraction skills to practice making change with money. The Hot Dots Subtraction Cards can also be used independently during centers to help memorize basic subtraction facts.

Practice is the best way to memorize basic addition and subtraction facts.

Next, students must be able to identify coins, add their values, and ultimately subtract to make change. Please help my students get the necessary supplies needed to master financial literacy skills. Being able to balance a checkbook later in life will help them make smart financial decisions. Thank you for considering our hands-on approach to math!
