Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students may not have material things but they have the will to succeed and a mind to problem solve. They are tenacious and savvy with the resources they are given. I love that they are willing to be vulnerable, make mistakes and learn from them, and accept constructive criticism ; and sometimes some tough love. My students showed up on the first day of school with nothing more than themselves, but that didn't matter because they trusted me to take care of them!
My students are raw in personality, speaking, and life experiences.
They seek guidance and opportunity to grow beyond themselves. Many of them need to be challenged academically, many of them need one-on-one attention due to behavior or educational gaps.
Overall, my students are special to me because I see glimpses of hope and want in their eyes. They think of my classroom as a second home and that is all I ever wanted as a teacher.
My Project
I am wanting to implement a reward system in my classroom that uses a financial system. Students will be learning about money indirectly through getting paid for classroom jobs, good behavior, responsibility with turning in work, acts of kindness and courage, and other citizen-like habits.
Students will earn a paycheck every two weeks for completing their classroom job responsibilities.
They will have to manage their paycheck correctly in order to pay "rent" for borrowing any school supplies or time (bathroom breaks) that were not a part of their original loan.
Students will learn how to write checks and handle cash to buy items at the marketplace where I will have special privileges for purchase (pillow backrest, board game time, partner choice, VIP desk, lunch with teacher). They will learn how to balance their budget and save up for larger purchases. Students will learn responsibility of keeping their money safe in the bank (teacher stored) or in their home (desk).
My ultimate goal is for my students to have fun learning about how to handle money and appreciate the things they have and will earn. I am hoping this also teaches my students to respect the items I and others have purchased for them to have a successful educational experience.
