Our rural, remote, Title I school is very unique. We have students from different backgrounds, cultures, religions, and races. Some students are learning English for the very first time. Some students are very talented when it comes to learning, some require special education, and some students are working their hardest to give their best. Each morning, students greet us and each other with high-fives and hugs. We are truly blessed by the relationships that are built within our tiny community. Our students are the builders of tomorrow: the teachers, scientists, farmers, mothers, fathers, doctors, engineers, dreamers, and doers.
Seeing students engaged and deeply involved in their own education is a great joy to me.
I strive to provide hands-on learning experiences in a safe environment, where students are free to explore, make real-world connections, and see their knowledge grow and expand! Knowing that failing is a step towards success relieves our students from being fearful to try, and great things happen because of their growth mindset!
My Project
Every young person should go through an entrepreneurship experience in their early life. This may be as simple as a lemonade stand or as complex as running a small business. Through these experiences, students learn to communicate with adults and peers, persevere through difficulties, overcome fear, face failure, sell ideas, create solutions, see opportunity around them, understand risk and reward, develop a growth mindset, collaborate with others, express creativity, and see their own potential. Regardless of whether or not a child wants to pursue entrepreneurship, the benefits of starting a business and running it as a kid are invaluable. That is why we have created this project.
My students would like to become more financially smart, while creating their own classroom business.
We will begin by reading "The Big Startup Guidebook for Kids" to help us learn how to run our business. After reading the guidebook, my students plan to use their new knowledge to set up their business. They would like to sell snacks to classmates, using classroom money they have earned through various jobs around the classroom. They have asked for popcorn, candy bars and small candy treats such as Tootsie Frooties and Starburst to sell.
I love being able to provide for my students, and I love this project so much. I cannot wait to see my fourth graders set up shop and become more financially smart with this real world project!
