How many times have you heard a student say (or maybe you've even said it yourself), "When will I ever use this?" My students realize that math will play a big part of their futures, but they struggle to comprehend the various mathematical concepts. Many are planning to enter the workforce immediately following high school graduation, but doubt their mathematical abilities to successfully navigate the financial intricacies of adulthood.
My students are enthusiastic about creating successful financial futures but lack the knowledge of where to begin.
They have often struggled in traditional math courses but thrive in a more project-based, hands-on learning environments. They want to understand how to determine the pros and cons of loans, savings accounts and credit cards. They strive to reduce their anxieties about the future by gaining experience handling car loans, vacation planning, payroll and taxes. They want to understand how to maintain a checking account and the pitfalls of overdraft.
The students enrolled in this course will include both those struggling with the concept of Algebra and also those seeking to experience some real world financial applications of Algebra.
My Project
Students will be working in a hybrid environment. These items will allow them to safely apply the knowledge they learned online to a real world setting(time clocks). Where students had previously worked in teams, sharing workspace, they now must spread out and collaborate online, whether that be across the room or between households. They will be given the opportunity to work both hands on and online to accomplish their goals. In order to work in the classroom, they will be forced to maintain the hygenic conditions necessary for safety during the COVID pandemic.
