Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember that teacher that left an impression on you? Can you reflect back on those tender moments you felt as a child in school? As a veteran teacher in a novel situation I am trying to do just that for my kindergarteners; create memorable moments and provide engaging fun learning activities.
We are an inner city school in RI.
The majority of our students are from low socio-economic homes. Research may suggest that there is a link between low achievement and low socio-economic status but that's a statistic I'd like to challenge. I see bright, enthusiastic five year olds, eager to learn. To me they are a ball of clay that can be molded into any shape. Our classroom has the basis supplies but I'd like to have those additional tools to add the final touches that add intrigue and pleasure to the learning experience.
So many of my students have never been read to at home perhaps that explains why I've got their full attention at story time at school. As the story unfolds their eyes are wide and they linger on every word. They will often clap at the end! I want them to be exposed to as many stories as possible.
My Project
Having story knowledge has a tremendous effect on learning how to read. Students first have to learn letter and sound associations before they can fully understand the meaning of the words. I'm asking for those items that would make a difference in my classroom; fun games to learn phonics, books on CD to enjoy during independent activities and organizational tools to help our day run smoothly.
During small group instruction I work with one group of students while the others are engaged in center activities. It's challenging to create activities for five year olds that are both engaging and educational. I'd like to strengthen my library center with book on CD, which children can listen to independently and comfortable.
Their response to literature enhanced by colorful images using colored pencils and markers. Their phonics skills sharpened by fun games they can play with their friends.
I came across this saying on a billboard: The difference between try and triumph is just a little umph!
The play on words was interesting and it made me think about students; what defines a great student from a struggling one, what's the difference between Âexcellent and good . . . just a little more Umph!
Help me put a little more Umph into my classroom by establishing a comfortable reading center where kids can enjoy a good story.
