Second grade is such a wonderful year of learning. We have so many different types of learners with many different needs. I have the privilege of teaching students with Autism, Gifted & Talented, students with ADHD, students who receive Speech & Language Services, and students who are considered typically developing. We have a diverse set of needs that need to be met every day.
My students have unique traits and backgrounds and when we come together they make our classroom feel like a family.
I am so excited for the learning that my students will show this year. They will learn to take time to do quality work and let their effort shine. These kids come from families who support and nurture their creative drive and give them the tools they need to be successful later in their education and life.
My Project
There is a lot of research about the negative effects of florescent lights-- decreased attention, eye strain, difficulty learning, etc. For students with autism, florescent lights can be even more debilitating and there is evidence of it increasing stimming activities and an increased sense of agitation.
I want ALL students to feel comfortable and able to learn in my classroom.
These light filters will help take away the harsh feel of the florescent lights and make my students feel more comfortable and able to focus in the classroom. It is especially important to me that my students with autism are in a learning environment where they can be successful.
The magnets will help hold up the light filters, and the other school supplies in the project (pencils, labels, disinfecting wipes) will be used throughout the year to keep our classroom a clean, organized learning space.
