Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Do the work."
This phrase has become the staple of our classroom. These students do not negotiate with their future or their success and nothing will dictate where they are going except for themselves. Drugs, gangs, at-risk status and economic stature will not stop these kids from their dreams
My school is in the second largest school district in Texas.
My students face issues as normal as teenage relationships and college selection but they are also dealing with so much more. I have students that pay their own bills and live by themselves and still show up on time for school every day. The choices for drugs, gangs, and poor relationships are all right in front of these kids, and yet they are making the choice to not get involved with them. They are doing the work necessary to become great members of society.
Yes, our school is 98 percent at-risk. Yes, we are almost to 97 percent free or reduced price lunch. These numbers are reflecting the circumstances they may live in but not the child.
My Project
Last year, our reading and writing scores for my school were in the 20s. That is out of a total score of 100. We need drastic change to get these kids reading and writing every day. I want to use film making and writing in correct English to make them excited about what their reading and writing can create. I am requesting two iPads, Otterbox protective cases, and a docking station so that we can create and edit original films on these devices.
We have to start changing the classrooms.
It is not realistic to lecture to students who are constantly engaged at the fingertips and then to think that students will retain the information. What is feasible is teaching in an engaging way so that these students become excited about working on projects and they begin to connect their education to real-world experiences. This project is about getting students to a point where they are excited about reading and writing.
