Many of my students come to me from low income families. Single parents are raising most of our students. Ten percent of my students live with a grandparent or a foster parent due to their parents being unfit. Most of my students are on free and reduced lunch. I am in a transient district, which adds to the struggles of the students who move around a lot. These students need extra care and attention. I provide supplies to many of my students because they just don't have the money for school supplies.
I try to be an emotional support to as many of my students as I can.
I teach the gifted population at North, which raises issues in having the necessary resources to really challenge and grow this group to reach their highest potentials; while still meeting their most basic needs. Many of my students enjoy coming to school, and I want to continue to try and provide them with the upmost opportunities to advance their curriculum and continue supporting them in their accomplishments and inquisitive nature. In order to reach these levels, my students first need to make sure they are getting the nutrition needed to succeed.
My Project
I work in a school district where over 85% of my students are on free and reduced-price lunch. This means many of them get the majority of their meals at school. Throughout the year, we are made aware of students that are experiencing homelessness.
I keep food in my room for students who need a snack throughout the day or some food to take home.
I'm requesting Granola Bars, breakfast items, snack packs and drinks. Many of my middle school students are concerned about their breath, because many of them don't eat breakfast everyday. The breath mints can help freshen up their breath. Peppermint is also known to help boost students performance. The food supplies will help students from feeling hungry, making them comfortable and ready to learn.
