Help me give my students hands on base Ten materials that will help the students visualize math problems and manipulate numbers. Headphones to decrease distractions an increase focus and reading materials to increase fluency and comprehension skills.
My Students are a creative and inquisitive group of second grade students. They absolutely love hands-on learning that extends thinking and exploration of their world. We work hard in math, science, technology and language arts.
I want to provide my students with as many experiences that extend their thinking and increase their abilities.
Music was a large part of my educational learning. I was consistently exposed to and provided opportunities to play instruments, sing and compose. When we add rhythm to our reading, create rhythmic ostinato with fractions or pull out instruments to learn a new musical concept my students show the same excitement and enthusiasm I remember.
Hands on learning and the bigger picture of why things are they way they are was a big part of my higher education. It inspired me to be a teacher and want to instill/provide that for my students. Playing and exploring through hands on representations helps students gain the why behind the mathematical reasons and number theory.
I love the light I see in my students eyes and the comfort they have in the classroom to try new things and become more enthusiastic about their learning. They are an inspiration to me!
My Project
My students missed Kindergarten due to Covid shut downs, part or all of first grade. This group had rotating teachers because of Covid issues. In addition we have students in and out this year as well. That is a rough start for any Second grade student. This group more that any other year needs a visual way to see the math and understand the numbers. We will be using the supplies for daily whole group instruction and small group work to extend thinking. Individual science reading materials allow the students to read and explore with out having to wait for the resources. New headphones will give each student a working pair so they can focus on the content programs, allowing them to block out noise and distractions.
The supplies I am asking for will help students be successful in the classroom setting and many items can be used at home if the student needs to self-isolate.
I want my students to have an amazing, successful year where they can catch up, continue to learn, interact safely, and have the materials they need to succeed.
