I teach in a public third grade classroom in Shiprock, NM in the Navajo Nation. Currently the third grade has 60 students. Because our school is located in a reservation setting, our students are all enrolled in the Navajo tribe, and many are rooted in their community through traditions, belief systems, and heritage. Even our school has a strong sense of community where teachers know all of the children and families. We see most parents several times a week for drop-off and pick-up. Many of the children have been in classes together since infancy creating many interesting, sibling-like relationships. They are hilarious and kind, and they both support and push each other every day. Our students' curiosity and enthusiasm drive them to immerse themselves in any kind of creative challenge.
The purpose of this page is to provide our students with the basic tools and experiences fundamental to a wholistic elementary education.
My Project
The books I am requesting are classic stories that will interest children of all ages. In third grade, my students' stamina in reading has grown along with their interest in books about all manner of things. The series books help captivate the readers who are fluent, but perhaps less intrinsically motivated to seek out a title that interests them. This way, once they learn to love an author and a series, they will be hooked!
The students in my classroom are flourishing, and I would love to give them the gift of a full library and a window into the world of literature!
The books include The Magic Treehouse series, books by Cynthia Rylant, and many many others!
