Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 6th and 7th grade Special Education language arts classes in a middle school with a high level of poverty and 21% English languge learners. The students in my classes are struggling readers and it is sometimes difficult for them to engage in the literature selections in the adopted curriculum. I would like to request a class set of the very funny and poignant book "Holes" by Louis Sachar. We would read this novel together as a class. The novel contains many important themes including racism, bullies, families, friendship, courage, self-esteem and homelessness, to name a few. My students will be engaged by the writing, the subject and the humor. We will be able to practice many comprehension strategies while reading literature that is accessible and exciting to the adolescents I work with. I would like to request 25 copies of the paperback book. My students - and many students to come - will love this book, and will learn to read better while we read it together.
