Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are brave, curious and full of energy. They make things different and exciting. While reading and writing is a challenge for most of them, they approach their work with positive attitudes and perseverance. They are caring, kind and have created a classroom community where we can all strive for our best and help each other along the way.
I teach one hundred, kind and curious students.
A majority of them are not reading at grade level and are English language learners. They all receive special services including, but not limited to, reading assistance, academic/behavior support and free lunch.
Our school is in a vibrant and loving community with a wide variety of cultures and traditions. While it has a lot to offer, the students still face challenges of poverty and gang violence. Despite all the trials they face outside of school, my students come ready to build relationships, grow their skills and achieve their goals. We celebrate wins together each day.
My Project
Today, my students came together and asked if it was possible to get food donated from the same people who provided them with the new furniture. I was blown away and excited about the way my students were advocating for their own needs. Not a day goes by without nearly all of my students asking for some food or a snack. I offer up bits and pieces of my lunch or snacks but never have enough to meet the needs of all students, and they know this, which is why we decided to create this project.
If basic needs like sleep, hunger, love, and comfort are not met the ability to be engaged and learn becomes extremely difficult.
I want to provide options for students who may have missed a meal or need the extra energy to make it through the afternoon slump. My school provides a free lunch but it is often not enough and may be the only meal a student eats for the day.
All of the items were chosen by the students. They took into consideration their health, which will give them energy, and what are the foods everyone can enjoy.
Help my students to finish the year strong with full bellies and full brains!
