My students love to read, and devour any book they can get their hands on! In just 2 short weeks, most have already completed the few books I have in my class library. From eager freshmen to seasoned seniors, I have wonderful students excited to have a new class library!
Many of my students are from lower socio-economic backgrounds, and may not have the opportunity to visit a library or own many books outside of school, so my class library will give them that opportunity they may not otherwise have.
The majority of my students represent the minority population in Pascagoula, MS, and I also have a number of English Language Learners, where English is not their first language.
Having a substantial class library will give these diverse students a chance to access a large variety of reading materials.
My Project
Being an English teacher, it is important that I expose my students to a wide variety of reading materials. Having a large class library will help me do that. Throughout the week, I encourage my students to not only read what is required, but to also read for entertainment. Having easy access to books in my classroom will help the students accomplish this goal.
The more books I have, the more they can read!
Besides in-class reading, I will also have a "check-out" system. This will allow students the opportunity to take a book home with them to read when there isn't enough time in class.
I have the bookshelves, now I just need the books!
