Imagine going to school every day, where you are judged on how well you do academically, and you have a learning disability or a health issue that requires an IEP. You can never quite measure up. Never really be the first one done with a test or have the correct answer at the ready during class discussions. The traditional school set up doesn't really work for you, and you need to depend on the special ed staff and the general ed teachers to make accommodations for you.
We have 134 absolutely awesome students that we work with in the special education department at our high school.
Many of them are also low income. These students work hard, and many work harder than traditional students because they have to do so to keep up with the other students. My favorite quality that I see in my students is that they have such empathy for others. They have struggled themselves so they are the first to cheer on a fellow student. They also are able to allow another to get a reward or praise without trying to steal their shine, in fact, they celebrate them too.
My Project
My resource room students need high interest, low reading level books to read during free read in their English classes. The books that they offer in the library are high reading level and our students struggle to read at that level. These high interest books are the perfect books for our students to read and enjoy. The low reading level make them easy enough and takes away the struggle that our students have when reading books with a reading level that is too high for them.
These books will bring the joy of reading to our students who don't always enjoy reading due to the difficulty they experience when reading books that are too difficult for them to read.
I chose books that have stories about people from diverse backgrounds that mirror the backgrounds of my students.
Thank you for considering bringing these books to my high school students.
