Our school is very small. Students are sometimes limited financially and geographically coming from such a rural area. The district has over fifty percent of the population eligible for free or reduced-price lunches. Students often do not have the supplies they need.
Despite these limitations, our students still work hard.
They participate in sports, clubs, and the arts. Oftentimes all three because they want to keep the programs running. Students work hard academically also. They want to learn and succeed.
My Project
When students are offered choice in what they read, they are more likely to enjoy reading. Students who are offered books they can relate to or books with topics they are interested in are more likely to become lifelong readers.
By creating a varied and diverse classroom library, I am offering my students books they will enjoy reading.
My classroom library offers a large selection of books for readers of different backgrounds, reading levels, and interests. My goal is to make reading fun, and something they choose to do, not because of an assignment, but because they want to read.
It is difficult to keep up with the cost of adding new titles to my shelf every year. However, there are many new authors and books that students will enjoy, so I am constantly trying to add more titles. This project will reach up to 150 students this year, but the books will be on my shelf for years to come reaching even more students.
